What is supply chain within life sciences?
Supply chain simply refers to the process of producing and distributing products. In the life science industry, this can often be a complex chain of processes that aim to preserve the quality of a pharmaceutical product or device through manufacturing and transportation.
What do supply chain jobs involve?
Supply chain jobs in medical devices, pharma and biotech are mostly concerned with the planning, strategy and logistics of various supply chain projects for drugs and devices. This is often from initial conception to implementation. Day-to-day responsibilities include reporting, evaluating projects and analysing metrics, with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) guidelines and Health & Safety requirements in mind.
Depending on the type of role and level of seniority, other duties can range from system entry and organising shipping to managing budgets and overseeing teams. For example, a Supply Chain Coordinator is involved in the procurement of raw materials, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and formulated and packaged products where they will deal with suppliers, take orders, raise purchase orders, maintain systems and report key performance indicators (KPIs). More senior positions within the supply chain field include Operations & Logistics Manager, Distribution Manager, Commercial Logistic Lead and Quality Supplier Manager roles.
Individuals working within supply chain will usually be educated to at least degree level and will benefit from having strong commercial awareness, excellent communication skills and an aptitude for analysis and strategic planning.
