A leading marketing communications company is advertising a vacancy for a Senior Medical Writer (Comms) to be based in their office in London. This organisation combines robust data with scientific knowledge to create innovative and impactful promotional campaigns that can be to the broader healthcare population.

The Senior Medical Writer will act as the scientific, editorial, and creative lead on key accounts and to support the more senior staff leading their team. They will be responsible for the scientific strategic direction and delivery of accurate editorial content across key accounts and act as scientific lead for pitches and proposal presentations.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Providing a standard of creative, scientific, and writing excellence for teams, providing internal mentorship to junior team members.
  • Leading scientific discussions with clients, external experts in informal, as well as formal settings (workshop/roundtable moderation).
  • Contributing to the scientific strategy and tactical planning of accounts internally and with clients including organic growth.
  • Writing scientific content for a range of medical education activities, maintaining high quality standards and timelines.
  • Working independently within teams to deliver high quality content in alignment with Agency processes and standards.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with clients and KOLs, considers feedback and acts as a point of contact for day-to-day inquiries.
  • Traveling to meetings and conferences and acting as an on-site resource for the client providing writing and project management services.
  • Contributing to strategy discussions with clients and KOLs and helping to develop ideas.
  • Managing workload across several accounts with attention paid to appropriately prioritising workloads and communicating with different teams to manage timelines.
  • Providing leadership and guidance to junior personnel and providing an example of best practice in interactions with clients, opinion leaders, and audiences.
  • Developing written materials in line with client objectives, ABPI Code of Practice, timelines, target audience, and key messages.
  • Ensuring the scientific integrity and editorial quality of content developed across multiple accounts.
  • Ensuring editorial content is fully and appropriately referenced, accurate and data-checked/QCed, and aligned with strategic intent of client/KOLs.
  • Working with senior leadership team to ensure workflow within department is optimised.
  • Attending conferences/symposia/client meetings to support content development, execution, and post-meeting evaluations/report development.
  • Liaising with authors and expert faculty advisors with independence and professionalism, both on conference calls and at live events.
  • Ensuring that the line manager and accounts team are continually updated on project progress.
  • Upholding editorial standards and processes.
  • Providing direction and leadership for communication best practices within editorial team.
  • Providing guidance and line-management leadership to junior editorial team members and providing best practice for interactions with clients, KOLs, and delegates.
  • Contributing to internal initiatives/taskforces as required.
  • Developing and maintaining productive working relationships with colleagues at all levels within the company, proactively encouraging and implementing improved efficiencies.
  • Identifying and developing business opportunities within existing accounts (organic growth).
  • Working in collaboration with the business development team and contributing to new business proposals.
  • Developing and presenting pitch presentations and proposals to clients.

Skills and Requirements:

  • Educated to at least degree level in medicine, pharmacy, or life sciences; higher qualification (eg MSc, PhD) preferred.
  • An extensive track record (approx. 2-4 years) of previous medical writing experience gained within a medical communications agency or scientific publishing environment.
  • Ability to produce "de novo" high quality and accurate scientific copy in a range of writing styles.
  • Understanding of the science and data behind client marketing messages.
  • Excellent written English, attention to detail and oral communication skills (including presentation skills) - comfortable dealing with KOLs/clients/senior company staff.
  • Completed ABPI training.
  • Good knowledge of strategic medical communications-understanding pharmaceutical industry drivers.
  • Fully understands and demonstrates adherence to international, national and industry specific compliance guidelines (IFPMA, ICJME, GPP, ABPI, other specific SOPs)
  • Demonstrable multitasking, project management, and execution skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including communication, presentation, persuasion, and influence.
  • Good organisational skills, including efficiency, punctuality, and collaboration in a team environment.
  • Proficiency with computer skills, such as MS Office.
