Drug Safety & Product Safety Jobs

What is pharmacovigilance (PV)?

Pharmacovigilance jobs are concerned with the safety and efficacy of drugs and devices for use by patients. The main purpose of PV & drug safety is to monitor and analyse unexpected side-effects of a medicine during clinical trials and after the product is marketed.

What do pharmacovigilance jobs involve?

The field of drug safety is commonly known as pharmacovigilance (PV) and is a crucial stage of a drug’s life cycle. Pharmacovigilance job descriptions are concerned with the monitoring, collecting, researching and evaluation of clinical data, adverse events and side effects. This is one of the only fields within life sciences that is primarily concerned with patient safety.

Pharmacovigilance professionals will also evaluate information from patients and healthcare professionals to understand the risks and benefits of a medicine and to promote the safe use of it. From our experience of placing candidates in these roles, we know they are also required to report any potential issues to regulatory authorities in accordance with employer, sponsor and government safety regulations and policies.

What skills and experience are needed in pharmacovigilance?

Pharmaceutical companies will require that an individual holds a relevant life science degree in a subject such as biological science or pharmacy. Good understanding of relevant pharmacovigilance and device regulations and guidelines is also necessary.
