What is clinical research?
Clinical research is a complex industry and jobs are often very specialised around the five stages of research in the development lifecycle. Recruitment is driven by the trials that a drug or device undergoes to confirm its safety and efficacy before being released into the market.
What do clinical research jobs involve?
A career in clinical research involves a variety of different roles. These range from more junior positions such as Clinical Trials Assistant (CTA) and Clinical Research Associate (CRA) to management roles as a Clinical Project Manager and Study Manager, all the way through to Clinical Director at local, regional or global level. These individuals are broadly involved in the supervising and collecting of data relating to the treatment of patients in clinical trials.
Candidates may typically start as a Clinical Trials Assistant, gaining experience in trials and might progress to the level of Clinical Project Manager where they are responsible for driving clinical projects forward, aiming to get the drug or device closer to the consumer market.
Clinical research professionals in these roles often travel across a specific territory, visiting trial sites and making sure that patient monitoring is done in an accurate and consistent manner. They can opt to work for a single pharmaceutical company or be employed by a contract research organisation (CRO) for the chance to work for multiple companies on various clinical trial projects.
