An international biotechnology company is advertising a vacancy for a Head of Fermentation position in their Swiss office. The organisation is known for their work in preventing transferable diseases such as Lyme disease and the Zika virus, along with their commitment to discovering, producing, and supplying sustainable ingredients to consumers. Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of fermentation scientists and research associates.
  • Managing and coordinating complex experimental schedules across multiple projects.
  • Rigorous quality control of fermentation experiments.
  • Maintaining, analysing, and reporting on data to different teams, including external stakeholders.
  • Troubleshooting and improving production processes.
  • Maintaining safe practices and work environment.
  • Tracking and resolving technical challenges at scale.
  • Lead continuous improvement in the fermentation process development area to improve process robustness and performance.
  • Work closely with other teams (strain engineering, analytical chemistry, down-stream processing and operations) to advance in the commercialization of different projects.
  • Directly responsible for the technology transfer of our processes to CMOs across different scales, including scale-up and manufacturing operations.

Skills and Requirements:

  • PhD, or MS in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Microbiology, or equivalent.
  • 7+ years' experience (PhD) or 9+ years' experience (MS) with a proven track record of accomplishments in bio-industrial settings.
  • Solid experience with bench-top, pilot plant, and commercial scale bioreactor operations under batch, fed-batch and continuous cultivation mode.
  • Strong track record in the technology transfer of bioprocesses to industrial settings, including pilot-plant and manufacturing operations.
  • Solid experience in bioprocess scale-up and -down in industrial settings.
  • Excellent understanding of biochemical engineering principles.
  • Strong knowledge of microbial systems, physiology, metabolism and nutritional requirements.
  • Excellent experimental design and data analysis capabilities including Design of Experiments (DOE).
  • Experience in driving products to commercialization is a plus.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to deliver results on schedule in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in building, managing, and fostering the development of a productive and innovative team.
  • Ability to travel (CMO support) up to 30%.
  • Demonstrated project management skills.
  • Demonstrable multitasking, project management, and execution skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including communication, presentation, persuasion, and influence.
  • Good organisational skills, including efficiency, punctuality, and collaboration in a team environment.
  • Proficiency with computer skills, such as MS Office.
