Proclinical is advertising a vacancy for a Formulation Scientist vacancy with a leading hospital and healthcare company. Based in Huddersfield, the organisation modernises and invests in health services to improve their quality. This is an exciting opportunity to join for an enthusiastic and driven induvial to join a service that contributes to patient care.

The Formulation Scientist will work under the direction of the company Development Team Leader and will devise work programs, carry out experimental work, and generate and complete development protocols and reports. They will follow current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) and Good Control Laboratory Practice (GCLP) principles. They will act as a Product Formulation subject matter expert (SME) and will undertake research into new and novel formulation approaches to the benefit of the HPS product portfolio.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in the development of new products in response to customer requests and developing appropriate robust formulations.
  • Writing development and validation protocols and reports for new product introductions, in compliance with MHRA expectations.
  • Ensuring all development activities are in line with departmental procedures and assisting in the development of enhanced procedures.
  • Carrying out lab scale and pilot scale manufactures for new products.
  • Liaising with manufacturing staff to ensure effective technology transfer of new products into routine manufacturing.
  • Supervising production of the 1st sales batch of each new product.
  • Liaising with other members of the development and Quality Control to ensure availability of equipment and laboratory resources for development activities.
  • Assisting with the completion of corrective and preventive actions arising from Quality Incidents within agreed time frames.
  • Complying with Health and Safety and COSHH regulations within the section.
  • Investigating novel formulations and excipients that may benefit current company products and company capability to formulate new products.
  • Evaluating these new technologies, formulation methods, and excipients to determine their possible introduction into the company.
  • Working closely with the Formulation Pharmacist to identify solutions to new product developments and opportunities for future developments.
  • Developing relationships with suppliers and external organisations (e.g. Universities) to assist the company in the development of new products and technologies.
  • Identifying future equipment needs for the continuing development of company capabilities in formulation development.
  • Proactively identifying development opportunities for new formulations and formulation technologies.
  • Ensuring all testing undertaken is performed in accordance with laboratory specifications and standard operating procedures.
  • Using Quality by Design principles in the formulation of new products.
  • Performing complex calculations in determining experimental design in process validations.
  • Participating in the Personal Development Review Programme regarding New product development and new product introductions.
  • Handling and moving goods and equipment (maximum weight 25kg), transferring them between cages, trolleys, cupboards, work areas, and shelving that are at different levels.
  • Complying with Trust policies for personal and patient safety and for prevention of healthcare-associated infection (HCAI); this includes a requirement for rigorous and consistent compliance with Trust policies for hand hygiene including the 'naked below the elbow' approach, use of personal protective equipment, and safe disposal of sharps. Knowledge, skills and behaviour in the workplace should reflect this; at annual appraisal you will be asked about the application of practical measures known to be effective in reducing HCAI. The Trust has the responsibility of ensuring that adequate resources are available for you to discharge your responsibilities.
  • Complying with Trust and departmental policies relating to security and patient confidentiality, ensuring that procedures are carried out in accordance with safe systems of work and current legislation.

Skills and Requirements:

  • A degree in Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or equivalent scientific qualification.
  • An MSC in Chemistry or other appropriate scientific discipline.
  • Extensive experience of Pharmaceutical Development and/or Analytical Development.
  • Experience in new product introduction.
  • Experience in preparing documentation in support of licensing.
  • Capable of preparing scientific documentation for regulatory submission.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including communication, presentation, persuasion, and influence.
  • Good organisational skills, including efficiency, punctuality, and collaboration in a team environment.
  • Proficiency with computer skills, such as MS Office.
  • Mid-Senior Level.
