  • The Construction Manager "CM" is appointed by and reports to the SGIE Construction Management Lead and CAPEX Project Manager.
  • The candidate has the overall management responsibility for the construction site assigned to the candidate jointly by the Project Manager and the SGIE CM&EHS Lead.
  • From the start of site activities until hand-over to operations, the CM is the representative of the project towards partners and contractors on the construction site and is a role model in all terms of outer appearance.
  • The candidate is responsible for managing and coordination as well as ensures compliant execution of all works and services at the project construction site with due consideration to the Lonza operating principles, the Quality and EHS Program, project schedule and cost targets.

Accountabilities:

  • Representative of the CAPEX Project Manager and CM Lead on site from construction to "MC".
  • Advises the Project Manager in determining the need for procurement and delivery dates in order to conform to the workloads, plans and schedules.
  • Leading and managing the CM Team including EPCM stakeholders
  • Leadership, relationship and functional responsibility.
  • Construction and Mechanical Completion planning and execution.
  • Reporting (progress / EHS).
  • Close-out report.
  • Cooperation with Lonza EHS & security service, third-party and contractor personnel.
  • Workforce assignment (quantity, quality, duration) as a function of Lonza policy and project strategy.
  • Coordination of personnel on site (quantity /quality / duration). Decide on personnel disposition issues.
  • Working instructions / procedures.
  • Promoting innovative thinking and cost reduction methods throughout.
  • Make all arrangements for assuring Quality and EHS measures are implemented and achieved.
  • Develop close-out report.
  • Approve and follow the constructability plan.
  • Controlling of all construction activities / directing contractors.

Operational Tasks:

  • Monitor and ensure compliant construction execution; analyse, initiate and manage corrective measures to mitigate risks.
  • Coordinate the construction staff incl. contractors and partners; Monitor and readily adjust the staffing of the construction as necessary.
  • Initiate and chair construction site meetings, brief contractors on construction site conditions.
  • Review and approve the regular construction reports (e.g. weekly, monthly) and forward to the CAPEX Project Manager.
  • Review and approve revisions to the construction schedule.
  • Implement design changes in consent with the Technical Team and the Project Management.
  • Review and approve work completion and acceptance certificates in cooperation with CQV, operations as well as contractors.
  • Execution of regular site inspections regarding EHS, progress and schedule aspects and participation in other inspections, e.g. with authorities, Lonza and contractor's management.
  • Cooperation in the preparation and execution of internal construction site audits.
  • Ensure that the first-aid book is kept regularly (if applicable) and handed over to the medical service at the end of the construction project.
  • Ensure the adherence to the construction contracts and their specifications.
  • Verify acceptance of the work and check acceptance records for each construction contract.
  • Coordinate the "Completion Management" and monitor the handling of punch lists, ensure closure.
  • Assist with the collation of the final construction 'as-built' documentation.
  • Assist the CAPEX project manager with the preparation and execution of internal site audits.
  • Perform active "Change Management" towards contractors in cooperation with the PM Team.
  • Assure that the "CEM" is implemented, known and communicated within the CM Teams. If, as thecase may be, work to be performed are not covered by existing Working Instructions and Procedures, he/she has to assure that such documents are established and implemented.
  • Lead the CM Team and support a proper team spirit, cooperation and communication. Ensure that the CM Team align their capacity to the project and are available throughout, as required.
  • Inform the CM Team in regular project meetings about the status, essential project events and challenges, developments and lessons learned.

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Bachelor degree (4 year) or higher in Engineering/Science (e.g. Mechanical, Construction) preferred.
  • Minimum ten (10) years or more Construction programs experience in Chemical / Pharmaceutical / Industrial Engineering EPC projects.
  • Advanced knowledge of construction industry practices, and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Worked within the construction industry, with a clear preference for pharmaceutical industry experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of Swiss and European codes and standards.
  • Eight plus years related construction management experience overseeing manufacturing environments.
  • Local, Kantonal and government legal compliance experience, and regulatory certifications as required.

Skills:

  • Must have high level of spoken and written German and English.
  • Required to speak effectively before groups of Senior Management, partners, contractors, and/or employees of the organisation.
  • Excellent computer skills required. Must have experience with MS Office Programs .
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule format. Good negotiating skills.
  • Ability to make good judgments and render good decisions.
  • Strong knowledge and awareness of other project discipline activities.
  • Excellent coordination and presentation skills.
  • Good writing skills and ability to document policies and procedures.
