A global pharmaceutical company that specialises in ophthalmology is advertising a vacancy for a Business Development Manager - EMEA. This historic organisation prides itself on its work across ophthalmic research, regulatory management, production, marketing, and distribution. Based in their office in Germany, this position offers an exciting opportunity to work with a company that has over 100 years of experience in the field.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Identify suitable business development opportunities (distribution, in-licensing, M&A opportunities) based on a solid understanding of the ophthalmic market.
  • Assess such opportunities in cooperation with R&D, Regulatory Affairs, Market Access, Medical Affairs, Marketing, Portfolio Strategy, Finance, Supply Chain Management and others from scientific, regulatory and commercial viewpoint.
  • Manage such opportunities from CDA to final contracts and facilitate a smooth handover to relevant functions as well as to Strategic Alliance Management.
  • Coordinate/support due diligence activities in Europe and in alignment with Global HQ
  • Negotiate contracts and lead cross-functional implementation of pre- and post-deal closure activities.
  • Guide and defend business development opportunities through decision-making bodies at Santen EMEA's management level and run them through necessary approval processes.
  • Regularly scout the markets and stay in touch with key stakeholders.
  • Spot emerging trends and opportunities.
  • Establish and maintain high-level contacts with peer pharmaceutical groups, biotechs, key research institutes, and venture capital companies in close liaison with the company's Global Business Development team and regional and global evaluation teams within R&D.
  • Track interactions with such third parties on an ongoing basis (license/contract data bases).
  • Regularly monitor obligations of Santen EMEA's regional distribution/license contracts.
  • Develop and maintain sustainable relationships to Santen's Global and US Business Development organizations and to all internal functions, especially to R&D, Marketing, Medical Affairs, and Market Access.

Skills and Requirements:

  • 7 years + experience in the pharmaceutical industry, preferably in ophthalmology.
  • 5 years + experience in Business Development roles in European markets.
  • 2 years + experience in Project Management or Alliance Management is a plus.
  • Pronounced experience in business transactions.
  • Experience in Licensing and M&A environment.
  • Experience in either drug development, pharmacology and/or pharma marketing/market access is a plus.
  • Experience in the sector of medical devices and technologies is a plus.
  • Fluency in English + possibly another European language.
  • Demonstrable multitasking, project management, and execution skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including communication, presentation, persuasion, and influence.
  • Good organisational skills, including efficiency, punctuality, and collaboration in a team environment.
  • Proficiency with computer skills, such as MS Office.
