Proclinical is working with an innovative global pharmaceutical company that is seeking am Associate Business Development Director to be based in either The Netherlands, Austria or Spain on a permanent basis. The role of the Associate Director is to establish BD EMEA platform competencies in surgical business (e.g. cataract and glaucoma) and associated franchises and manage EMEA-regional and Global business development (GBD) projects in line with strategic priorities of the company EMEA and GBD; this includes all project steps from screening and assessing opportunities to contract negotiations and post-closure deal management.
Job Responsibilities:
- Establish a dedicated "Surgical BD" platform in EMEA in full alignment with strategic directions of EMEA management and Corporate Development
- Drive the conceptualization and implementation of the company's EMEA surgical business pillar
- Identify and exploit BD synergies of existing or portfolio strategic surgical and pharmaceutical franchises
- Identify, attract and develop talent(s) accelerating the impact and output of the "Surgical BD" team
- Assume the responsibility of developing and leading a committed and proactive "Surgical BD" team
- Screen and identify suitable EMEA business development opportunities (distribution, in-licensing, M&A, commercial BD) based on a solid understanding of the ophthalmic market, especially in the surgical field
- Assess such opportunities in coordination with R&D, regulatory affairs, market access, portfolio strategy and strategic marketing from scientific, regulatory and commercial viewpoint (development of commercial forecasts and business cases)
- Coordinate/support due diligence activities in EMEA/globally
- Guide and defend BD opportunities through decision-making bodies at the company's EMEA and HQ level
- Lead such opportunities from scouting through CDA to final contract execution
- Candidly pursue and lead necessary cross-functional activities for facilitating a smooth integration of assets, including project management activities with a strong cross-functional mindset
- Regularly scout the markets and establish/reinforce suitable and impactful networks
- Spot emerging trends and opportunities, especially in the surgical field and adopt new business directions for the company on global and/or regional level
- Establish and maintain privileged contacts with peer med-tech groups, biotech's, key research institutes and venture capital companies in close liaison with internal company stakeholders
- Track interactions with such third parties on an ongoing basis (license/ contract data bases)
- Represent and advertise company Business Development at scientific and license conferences
- Develop and maintain sustainable relationships with the company's global and US business development, corporate development and portfolio strategic functions, to R&D, Market Access, Medical Affairs, Strategic Marketing and Regulatory Affairs, as well as with the Surgical Groups (R&D and Commercial)
- Develop a good understanding of country- and region-specific needs by developing and maintaining a good interaction and relationship with respective General Managers and Country Managers
Skills and Requirements:
- 10 years+ experience in the healthcare industry, preferably with medical devices exposure
- 5 years+ experience in surgical business (e.g. KAM, BD)
- 5 years+ experience in ophthalmology
- 3 years+ experience in Business Development or corporate strategic roles in European markets
- Experience in M&A environment preferred
- Experience in KAM, market access, marketing or medical affairs preferred
- Experience in the sector of medical devices and technologies is a strong plus
- Fluency in English + possibly another European language
- 5 years + experience in leading teams
