What is HEOR?
The purpose of health economics and outcomes research (HEOR) - sometimes known as pharmacoeconomics - is to demonstrate the value of a medicine, and gain patient access by presenting data and research to key industry stakeholders that proves the effectiveness of the drug. Market access is another distinct area that ensures drugs are marketed at a reasonable price so that patients can access the drugs they need.
What do HEOR and market access jobs involve?
Broadly speaking, health economics jobs involve the study of economic and quality-of-life data collected from clinical trials, to profile the value of a drug and to show that it works effectively to treat a disease. This data is presented to doctors, patients, key opinion leaders and regulators to show the value of the drug and to help obtain access for patients. HEOR jobs often work closely with market access and pricing & reimbursement departments. This is because they use health economics and health outcomes data to gain entry to the market and secure optimal pricing and reimbursement for a drug. Another specialist field within HEOR is epidemiology, which is the study of how diseases occur in various age groups, nationalities and ethnicities.
Although there are several routes into the field, candidates looking to pursue a career in HEOR usually have a Master’s Degree in Health Economics or a related field, such as Public Health.
