Clinical Research Jobs

At ProClinical, our specialist clinical research recruitment team are seeking experienced candidates for a range of clinical research jobs at pharmaceutical companies and contract research organisations (CROs) including associate (CRA), project manager and director roles.

Clinical research is a complex industry and jobs are often very specialised around the five stages of research in the drug development lifecycle. Recruitment is driven by the trials that a drug or device undergoes to confirm its safety and efficacy before being released into the market. Within this functional area alone there are many paths you can choose. Searching for new clinical research roles can become time-consuming and can be difficult to find suitable employers with the right job for your career ambitions. As well as knowing what our clients’ needs are, our consultants have specialist experience in understanding the clinical research process and place candidates in a variety of job roles, from clinical administrator to director positions.

A clinical research salary can vary greatly depending on the position and the amount of experience that you have. To find out what you could earn, use our salary calculator to check average salaries for your current or desired clinical research job.

What does the clinical research process involve?

For a drug to be released to consumers, it needs to undergo thorough testing. Drugs and devices require regulatory approval at the end of every phase before proceeding to the next clinical phase. The pre-clinical studies entails a lot of experiments on animal and human cells. It is then determined whether the drug or device has enough scientific merit for further development. The drug or device then goes through subsequent trials and is subjected to different clinical tests.

The trials intensify with each phase and the drug or device is tested with a different sample each time, across a variety of demographics and populations. Once the drug or device has been approved through the four-stage process, it is released into the marketplace for consumer or prescription-based purchase. Following on from here there is post marketing surveillance and translational research, which is still a very important part of clinical research and future drug discovery.

A general recruitment agency often won’t have in-depth knowledge about clinical research or even be aware of the different phases and roles that are required for each. Registering with ProClinical increases your chances of being the first to be contacted should a suitable job role arise. Our sophisticated database connects you with hundreds of companies within the industry who are actively searching for suitable candidates in clinical research.

Companies that conduct clinical trials must adhere to strict regulations, such as Good Clinical Practice, so they can be very selective when selecting candidates. Our career advice blog offers some advice about how to get a job in clinical research

What types of roles are available?

A career in clinical research involves a variety of different roles. ProClinical recruit for a range of vacancies from Clinical Trials Assistant (CTA) / Clinical Research Associate (CRA) to Clinical Project Manager and Study Manager, all the way through to Clinical Director at local, regional or global level. These individuals are broadly involved in the supervising and collecting of data relating to the treatment of patients in clinical trials.

Candidates we have placed in these roles often travel across a specific territory, visiting trial sites and making sure that patient monitoring is done in an accurate and consistent manner. Candidates may typically start as a Clinical Trials Assistant, gaining experience in trials and might progress to the level of Clinical Project Manager where they are responsible for driving clinical projects forward, aiming to get the drug or device closer to the consumer market .

Do all clinical research jobs require a degree?

From our experience, it is not always necessary to have a life sciences degree to get into the field of clinical research, but it certainly helps to enable further career development. We can offer you positions which will give you experience across a variety of therapeutic areas and clinical research phases, therefore enabling you to develop your career within clinical development.
