Whether you’re looking to climb the career ladder or want to widen your skillset, there is huge opportunity for biotechnology professionals to become very influential in the industry.

A biometrics salary can vary greatly depending on the position and the amount of experience that you have. To find out what you could earn, use our salary calculator to check average salaries for your current or desired biometrics job.

What do biometric jobs involve?

Clinical programmer jobs involve developing programs and macros that are used to collect and interpret medical data to support Biostatistics, Data Management and Medical Writing and other functions.

Biostatisticians, provide statistical support for clinical studies, from the conception stage right through to analysis and reporting. They work across all four phases of clinical development and have to adhere to regulatory guidance. They sometimes get involved in analysing efficiency and safety data, which is integrated across clinical studies as and when required.

Highly experienced biostatisticians often take on responsibility for all statistics required for the clinical study of a particular drug or device. They also supervise other biostatisticians working on the project, and provide statistical input to overarching clinical development plans and wider regulatory strategy.

What roles does ProClinical recruit for?

We recruit for a range of biometrics roles, from junior to VP level across different company sizes and locations. Our recruitment consultants have in-depth knowledge of the biometrics industry and have undergone rigorous training and adhere to a service quality promise, which ensures confidentiality and discretion when working with you to find a suitable job match. We recruit for a number of positions such as clinical data manager, statistical analyst, clinical statistician and SAS programmer.

What is involved day-to-day in a clinical data job?

Day-to-day responsibilities vary depending on the type and level of role. Typically, the day consists of preparing analysis plans, writing detailed specifications, checking for consistency and communicating with clients regarding any statistical analysis issues. Other responsibilities often include interpreting analyses and writing the statistical sections of reports. Depending on the role, candidates typically report to a manager or head of department.

What skills and experience are required?

Most companies look for candidates with an MSc or PhD in a relevant discipline. For more specialist roles such as programming, a BSc in Programming or similar degree is often desirable, if not essential.

From our experience, a degree is not the only thing potential employers look for. Extensive biometrics experience and sound judgment to plan and meet goals are both sought after skills. Creativity is also important, balanced with the ability to focus on a project and specific objective. As projects are often global, being comfortable communicating via Skype and other technologies is just as important as the confidence to hold face-to-face meetings.

Are any specialist skills required?

SAS is analytics software that is used by clinical data analysts, programmers and statisticians to collect and interpret clinical data. SAS programming is a skill that is particularly important for bio and clinical statistician jobs. We also recruit for specialist SAS programmer jobs, which typically involve processing and summarising data collected throughout the development of a medicine. This information is usually added to the final documentation of a clinical study, which is required to show that a medicine is safe and effective to use.

How can ProClinical help?

We are highly experienced in placing candidates in biotech jobs across the UK and internationally. We regularly receive new vacancies for permanent and contract positions such as principal biostatistician, senior statistical programmers and clinical data managers.
