US biotech, cell therapy research team expansion

Case study

The overview

Our partner is a Massachusetts-based next generation immunotherapy biotech, specialized in pioneering individualized T-cell therapies for cancer and other serious disease areas. The company exploited a wide range of computational, discovery and therapeutic platforms to rapidly design, engineer and develop novel T-cell immunotherapies that direct the patient’s immune system towards neoantigens. Following a merger with a global biopharmaceutical company, they initiated a period of significant expansion of their local platforms and research teams to support the company’s growing pipeline.

The challenge

The company’s executive leadership team planned for growth across several departments simultaneously to establish a multi-platform approach, utilizing various viral, non-viral and gene editing technologies to develop next generation immunotherapies and drive their pipeline forwards. This made the project particularly challenging, based on the common requirement for candidates to demonstrate a strong knowledge of immune cell isolation, primary cell culture and functional immune cell assays, alongside additional specific requirements for each vacancy.

Due to the sheer volume of hires, niche skillsets required, and the need for technically specialized recruiters to introduce candidates to the most suitable hiring managers, the company’s existing TA team exclusively partnered with us to source their research hires.

The solution

Our specialist team of senior recruiters, all with a high-level of expertise in the scientific discipline, performed an in-depth and thorough search for candidates with the desired experience, both locally and nationally. The hiring managers were so impressed with the quality and relevance of our shortlists that they asked us to conduct first stage screening, which expedited the time from submittal to offer considerably.

We were also able to utilise our video conferencing platform to facilitate remote interviews with the hiring managers, which removed this administrative burden from their TA team and further streamlined the process. We scheduled regular check-ins with key stakeholders to provide feedback on our searches, as well as live market intelligence to give the client the best change of securing the top talent in the market.

The outcome

Within 12 months, we have provided highly technical and niche scientific hires at MS and PhD level to build out key leadership positions and laboratory teams across the company’s translational immunology, T-cell immunology, cancer immunology, molecular immunology, computational biology, biochemistry, and proteomics teams. We have helped enable the company to establish and build out new teams that have launched research platforms which have proven instrumental in the progression of their cancer immunotherapy pipeline as they continue to establish themselves leader in this field.
